another evening

I get off the subway at Essex Street and I'm heading towards East Broadway in the Lower Lower East Side, or East Chinatown, or The White People's Projects, which is what I called it when I lived there, and I've got my headphones in. I'm halfway across Delancey and there's an accident on the outbound lanes of the Williamsburg bridge. ESU and fire engine trucks are coming and turning. I can barely hear the sirens, but the blue and red lights are so hyper-bright it's like a punch in the retinas.( more... )
